Cabbage Poriyal Recipe

Cabbage is one of my favourite vegetable. Not only because it is very good for health but also because it is easy to cut this vegetable into tiny pieces. I think everyone knows that cabbage is very good in preventing cancer. We can do various dishes with cabbage and one simple one is cabbage poriyal.

Ingredients:

2 Cups cabbage, shredded or cut finely

1/2 tsp Urad dal

1/2 tsp channa dal

1/2 tsp cumin seeds

1 tsp Mustard seeds

2 Dry red chillies, broken OR 2 tsp Chilli powder

Curry leaves

1/4 Cup fresh coconut, grated

A pinch turmeric powder

2 tsp Oil

1tsp hing

Salt to taste

Onions 1 medium size (Optional)

Method:

In a frying pan and heat oil.
Add mustard seeds. When the seeds pops add hing and cumin seeds.
Now add urad dal and channa dal and wait till they get slightly brown.

Add dry red chillies, onions, curry leaves and turmeric powder.
Stir the mixture for few seconds.
Add cabbage, salt and 1/4 cup of water. If using chilli powder instead of dry red chillies, add the chilli powder now.

If cooking in a non stick pan then just sprinkle the water and close the lid. Rest of the work is done automatically. Non stick pans rocks!
Cook over medium heat until the cabbage is tender. If using non stick pan, cook in Sim flame.
Mix grated coconut with it and serve hot.

Note: You can also add crushed garlic flakes (2-3) along with onions to increase the flavour.

You can eat this dish with plain rice and ghee or with any spicy rice variety.

Happy cooking!
